Planning on going to South Africa?
Let me help you out!

I just got back from the most magical 10-day trip to Cape Town — complete with a wine tram adventure, safari excursion, penguin beach day, and epic sunset hike... and those are just a few of the many highlights. Safe to say — I am obsessed! I would absolutely stomach the 16-hour flight time again and again just to spend more time in the magical city that is Cape Town.
If you’re on the fence about traveling to South Africa... please take my advice and just book the trip. The people are so kind, it's insanely cheap, the food is amazing, and you’ll never run out of things to see and do.
Here are my honest thoughts, travel recommendations, and absolute "Morgan Musts" that you need to check off your list if you visit.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Is it safe?
Yes! I never felt unsafe during my time in Cape Town. Obviously, there are areas with crime, but not in the touristy parts. Use common sense, don't wear anything flashy, travel in groups, and don't wander around at night — you’ll be totally fine.
Can you go there alone as a female traveler?
I walked around and explored plenty on my own (I was there with a group) and never felt unsafe as a female. I’ve met plenty of people who have traveled solo to Cape Town and had positive experiences. But again — be smart and use common sense, folks.
Do you need to carry cash?
I didn’t take out any cash and never needed to use any. Maybe a little bit for tips if you book any tours... but every place I went accepted cards or Apple Pay.
Are there Ubers? How do you get around?
Yes — there are Ubers, and they are SO easy to call (and very cheap). Everywhere I went, I called a car through the Uber app with no issues. We were even able to book large vans for our big group and schedule them in advance to take us to and from the airport.
How long should you stay?
I would recommend at least one week in Cape Town to hit all the highlights and see as much as you can.
Should I stay in Camps Bay?
Honestly, I preferred Sea Point much more than Camps Bay (the main touristy area), but I’ll say this — I enjoy being off the beaten path and away from the hustle and bustle. Camps Bay is the main part of town and the most touristic area — it’s incredible! Sea Point is a 10-minute Uber away and an up-and-coming area on the coast with a walking path, promenade, and plenty of bars and restaurants. It depends on what you want, but for me personally... Sea Point > Camps Bay.

Where to Stay
I went to South Africa for my Miles With Morgan group trip, and we brought 14 girls. Our group stayed at the most insane villa in Camps Bay that would be perfect for any large group. The villas were truly stunning — infinity pools, beachfront views, and a full staff.

Myself and my fellow trip coordinators stayed down the road in Sea Point at The President Hotel. Now, I’m more of a hotel gal myself (I prefer room service over an Airbnb), and I could not recommend this property more. It's a 5-minute walk from all the popular restaurants and bars, there's a pool, gym (small but still a gym!), spacious rooms, breakfast included, and the staff is truly unreal.

Where to Eat
The Nines
If you’re wanting a fancy dinner... look no further. It's in Sea Point inside the most stunning hotel. The food was incredible — but even better? The views. Come right before sunset and enjoy the open-air vibes. Make sure to make a reservation!
Bilboa
My favorite meal of the entire trip! Go for brunch and enjoy the oceanfront views from their patio in the heart of Camps Bay. Get the orzo and grilled halloumi and thank me later. Everything I ate here was simply divine! We talked about this meal for days.
Chinchilla
Another great brunch or lunch spot in Camps Bay.
Codfather (a Morgan must)
You cannot go to Cape Town and not have dinner at The Codfather. It's a classic! Pro tip: make a reservation (well in advance) and request to sit in the wine cellar/room. It's a much more intimate experience and you’re out of the hustle and bustle of the main dining area — it gets packed. Make sure to not only enjoy the fresh seafood but also the rotating sushi bar (I honestly thought this was better than my actual dinner). 10/10 experience!
Ouzeri
Off the beaten path near Bo-Kaap (the famous brightly colored houses) lies a little Mediterranean spot. Do not sleep on it! I went for lunch and we tried the entire menu (no joke) — it was one of the best meals I’ve had in a long time. It’s family-style, so go hungry so you can try it all! I didn’t love the area the restaurant was in (kind of dirty), but it's worth going to if you’re already nearby.
ZenZero
A cute and vibey dinner spot in Camps Bay. Great aesthetic and yummy drinks!
Kauai
OMG. I wish we had this in America! The best spot for casual wraps and salads — perfect for lunch on the go. It's healthy, cheap, and freaking delicious.
Sonny & Irene (a Morgan must)
If you want a cute brunch spot for the girls — look no further! In the same building as The Nines, this spot has the cutest décor + amazing food. Get the steak wrap... just trust me.
Kloof Street House
A popular dinner spot with a fun, quirky atmosphere. I thought the food was okay (but my friends all loved it). You should at least go for a drink and dessert because the aesthetic is 10/10.
Honorable Mention: La Colombe Restaurant
(Contemporary cuisine fusing local ingredients with French flair in an upmarket vineyard setting.)
This is supposed to be one of the top restaurants in the world, and so many people told me to go. Sadly, I couldn’t get a reservation — even a month in advance. So if you’re planning ahead... MAKE A RESERVATION NOW! Please go for me and report back!

My favorite meal - brunch at Bilboa.
Where to Drink
The Silo (a Morgan must)
If I could recommend one place for you to go in Cape Town... it’s The Silo Hotel. You simply must see it! Make a reservation in advance for drinks on the rooftop and enjoy happy hour + small bites before heading to dinner. It is stunning!
One & Only Hotel
This was a recommendation from a friend. Unfortunately, I never made it here, but I had to include it because I’ve heard so much about it.
Nice to Matcha (a Morgan must)
The best matcha in the entire world. I said what I said.
Maggy Lou’s
Right next to Nice to Matcha. Great place for a casual breakfast, coffee, or laptop work vibe.
Platō
The spot for coffee in Camps Bay. There's always a line, but it’s worth it for a good cup of coffee.

My favorite drink spot - The Silo Hotel rooftop.
What to Do
Boulders Beach — See the Penguins (a Morgan must!!!)
Do not miss this! One of my favorite things we did in Cape Town. Pro tip: if you time it during low tide, you can go past the main pier where the big crowd is (just keep walking straight) and reach the beach. Climb over the boulders (don’t wear a short skirt!) and you’ll be right on the sand, up close with the cutest creatures you’ll ever see.

Enjoy a Sunset Stroll in Sea Point
This was my favorite. During golden hour, everyone heads to the walking path or beach to enjoy the sunset at Saunders Beach. It’s truly magical and so peaceful. My tip? Grab a wrap from Kauai (there’s one about 5 minutes up the street) and eat it on a bench while watching the waves crash.

Hike up Lion’s Head Mountain
A challenging hike, but absolutely worth the sweat! We booked a tour through Cape Town Trails and had Jarrod as our guide — we loved it. You can absolutely do this without a guide (I wouldn’t recommend going solo), but having one helps with route planning and timing, especially for catching the perfect sunset spot.
The tour guide company we used.

Go Wine Tasting on the Franschhoek Wine Tram
Another South Africa must — the wine tram! A hop-on, hop-off train that takes you through the gorgeous wine country about an hour from Camps Bay. You can book a private tram or buy tickets for the public one. We did a private tour for our group and stopped at three wineries for tastings: Grand Provence, Lynx, and Klein Goederust.

Kayak with Dolphins
I’m dying to come back and do this again because, if timed right with the weather, it can be epic. Kayaking next to dolphins?! Amazing.
Unfortunately, I went on a foggy morning and couldn’t see two feet in front of my kayak. Tragic. But we did see dolphins and seals, which made it still pretty amazing! I’d absolutely recommend doing this — just book a later slot (I went at 7 a.m. and the fog hadn’t cleared yet).
The kayak tour I booked through Airbnb.

Safari Game Drive at Aquila Reserve (a Morgan must)
YOU HAVE TO DO THIS! You can take a day trip here from Camps Bay (around a 2 - 2.5 hour drive) or you can opt to spend 1 night and doing an evening game drive and a morning drive. It's the best way to experience and African safari without having to leave South Africa and get on a plane to fly to another country. This reserve is home to The Big 5 and if you are lucky - you will see them all on your game drive (we saw 4 out of 5... not too bad!)
If you want to know what to wear... I linked everything here. Think: layers, neutrals, boots and a hat. I brought bug spray but didn't use it once.

Things to Skip (In My Opinion)
Cape of Good Hope
Was it nice to see the southern most tip of Africa? Yes. Would I drive out there again? No. It’s really just a sign for photos. Cool, but not amazing. I wouldn't stress if you don't make it here.
Table Mountain
This didn’t impress me. If you’re torn on whether to go, I say save your time and money for another activity. The lines are long, you’re crammed into a cable car, and once at the top, the views are fine—but not better than what you’ll see from Lion’s Head!
Bo-Kaap
Cape Town is famous for the brightly colored houses, and I love color, so naturally I wanted to check it out. I was underwhelmed. It’s in a pretty dirty area of town, and personally, I don’t think it’s worth going out of your way for. I snapped a single photo and then left to get lunch.

Cute... but not worth the hype.
My final thoughts? I absolutely fell in LOVE with Cape Town. Not just for the views and the amazing sunsets and the cool activities... but for the people and the energy. It is such a lively place and everyone I met there was so kind and welcoming. It truly made me feel at home and I cannot WAIT to plan a trip back soon. Maybe next time I will make it into the cage to swim with the sharks ;)

If you want to check out all the places I mentioned above, here is my apple map guide with everything linked for easy access. Enjoy!
Where to next?!
