3 Day Guide: Queenstown, New Zealand

3 Day Guide: Queenstown, New Zealand

Want to hit all the highlights while visiting Queenstown? Here's my guide to everything you simply MUST see while visiting.

I have traveled to many countries (27 to be exact), and do you want to know which one takes the spot for number one most beautiful?

New Zealand.

Hands down! It was unlike anything I have ever seen. The South Island of New Zealand is where mountains, waterfalls, and epic lakes collide… there’s so much beauty, it’s hard to even believe it’s a real place. Every photo I snapped literally looked photoshopped (although I swear they aren’t).

If you are visiting, my top tip would be — don’t make the mistake I did. You simply need more than 3 days in a place like that. Unfortunately, due to my wacky schedule, that’s all the time we had. But fear not, we managed to pack in SO many sights for me to report back on. If you have the option, though, I’d recommend at least a week in Queenstown so you can explore all it has to offer.

Side note: I haven’t visited the North Island yet, but if you’re trying to decide between the two… THE SOUTH ISLAND. Please just trust me on that.

Must-see sights and activities:

Here is a list of everything we saw and what I would recommend checking out if you are there. My tip? Hire a driver — particularly if you are not well-versed in driving on the opposite side of the road. If you're only there a couple of days like I was, absolutely splurge on a private driver so you can fit in more activities and not worry about parking. If you're there longer, you can take your chances with a rental car!

We used DL Drivers in Queenstown and absolutely loved our experience.

If you do happen to book with them, please tell them I sent you and give Dave and Josie a huge hug from me.

Sunrise at Moke Lake

Hands down the most beautiful sight I saw on this trip!!! Please do not let the early wake-up call deter you from heading out to Moke Lake to see the sunrise. We got up at 4:30 am (eek) to meet our driver at 5 am and make it to the lake by 5:30. You want to make sure you get there BEFORE the sun rises so you can see it go from dark to light and all the epic color changes. You only need around an hour here, so you can easily head to the next destination — or go home and take a nap.

Arrowtown for food & shopping

The quaintest little town on the outskirts of Queenstown and absolutely worth exploring. There are plenty of cute shops and restaurants, and it sits right along a river in case you want to take a little nature stroll. We came here for breakfast and then did some light window shopping afterward.

For my adventure people — Arrowtown is right by the Kawarau Gorge, which is an EPIC view, and you can also bungee jump here!

Hit the wineries

You simply cannot come to New Zealand and not enjoy their wine… specifically a crisp Sauvignon Blanc. There are tons of wineries to check out — you could honestly make an entire day of just bopping around and sipping wine.

We went to two and loved both. They’re super close to each other as well.

Amisfield: We walked in for a tasting and didn’t need a reservation! They have a gorgeous back patio if you want to stay and enjoy a glass of wine outside.

Gibbston: We made a reservation for a tour + tasting here and LOVED it. There’s an incredible wine cave where you do the tasting, which is pretty fun to see. Before or after your reservation, make sure to stop by their cheese shop for snacks — the best cheese I’ve ever tasted. We opted to sit at a table, enjoy some cheese and crackers, and order more wine flights because… why not.

Onsen Hot Pools & Spa experience

AN ABSOLUTE MUST!!!

You can reserve a hot tub for an hour (or longer) and soak, relax, and enjoy a glass of wine with the most epic views. Make sure to book well in advance — I think we made our reservation around two months before going (they fill up fast). If you have extra time, I’d absolutely recommend booking a massage as well. The entire place is beyond dreamy!

If you’re planning to keep exploring afterward, there are plenty of bathrooms and changing rooms to get ready for your next adventure.

Glenorchy Lagoon & Boat House for sunset

About 45 minutes from Queenstown is a tiny town called Glenorchy. There isn’t much to do there (in my opinion), but you simply must come for sunset. Absolutely stunning. 11/10. No notes.

I recommend arriving around 7:30–8 pm (keep in mind, I went in January and sunset is at 9:30 pm). Wear sneakers and walk the path to Glenorchy Lagoon — it’s a little confusing, but park your car and hang a right. Follow the signs and you’ll eventually reach the most gorgeous little lagoon with a picnic table. My biggest regret was not packing a picnic, cracking open a bottle of wine, and enjoying the serene views.

From there, walk back to the dock (right in front of the parking area). If you're mapping it, search “Glenorchy Wharf & Viewpoint.” There’s a single dock that leads out over the water, surrounded by mountains on every side. Unreal. Stay AFTER the sun sets — that’s when the colors really start to change and it gets extra magical.

For hiking lovers: Glenorchy is known for its hikes and trails. It may be worth staying a day or two here if that’s your thing.

Walk around downtown Queenstown

We booked an Airbnb near downtown and loved walking into town each night for dinner. A vibrant, walkable hub on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown is known for its adrenaline adventures, jaw-dropping mountain scenery, and buzzing food scene (hello, Fergburger). From lakeside strolls and gondola rides to boutique shopping and lively bars, it’s truly so cute and enjoyable for every type of traveler.

Milford Sound day trip

YOU SIMPLY MUST DO THIS. I REPEAT… YOU MUST GO TO MILFORD SOUND. Carve out an entire day — it’s time-consuming, but so worth it.

Milford Sound is one of New Zealand’s most breathtaking natural wonders. Some even say it’s the “8th Wonder of the World.” A dramatic fjord carved by glaciers, framed by towering cliffs, waterfalls, and lush rainforest. A day trip here is absolutely worth it for the once-in-a-lifetime scenery, wildlife spotting, and unforgettable boat cruise through misty peaks and mirror-like waters. It’s pure magic!!!

We booked a small-group tour with Altitude Tours and loved it. Our group was around 12 people and fit comfortably in the van. Make sure you book a smaller van and not a massive tour bus because:

  1. You’re in the car for at least 4 hours each way

  2. A smaller van gives a more customized experience

Our driver stopped multiple times for photo ops, waterfalls, and viewpoints — he was amazing.

Once we arrived, lunch was provided (and it was actually really good?), and then we boarded the boat. Pro tip: get in line FIRST so you can snag a top-deck seat. The cruise lasts about an hour and the views are truly unbelievable.

My biggest regret was not booking a helicopter or small plane ride back. Altitude offers both options, and from what I’ve heard… you definitely want to do that. You’ll see even more of Milford Sound and get home much faster.

Looks like I’ll just have to go back…

Where to eat + restaurant recs

We didn’t have a ton of time in Queenstown, but here’s where we ate and loved:

1. Fergburger
Voted best burger in the world. Did it live up to the hype? Yes. Be prepared for a long line no matter what time you go — we waited about an hour — but it moves fast and the burgers are unreal. Are they the BEST in the world? Debatable. But it’s a 10/10 experience and you simply cannot leave Queenstown without trying it.

Pro tip: Get the gelato afterward. It’s even better.

2. Rodd & Gunn
A super cute dinner spot across from the lake. If you want a nicer meal with a view, go here. The food was divine and the cocktails even better. Dinner, apps, and drinks for three of us came out to about $45 each. Not bad — your American dollar goes very far in New Zealand.

3. Provisions (Arrowtown)
An unreal breakfast spot. Everyone said this was THE place in Arrowtown and they were right. Order the Turkish eggs, brisket toast, and a turmeric latte. I still dream about that latte.

Grab a sticky bun and scone for the road, too.

4. The Boat Shed
Arguably the most popular restaurant in Queenstown. The views are insane and you’ll want a reservation, especially for a waterfront table. I went for breakfast right when they opened and snagged a table (being solo helped), but within 20 minutes there was a line out the door.

Is the food life-changing? No. But it’s yummy and the views are next level. I wouldn’t stress if you miss it, but it’s worth stopping by if you can.

There you have it! If you are in Queenstown, I hop you are able to stop by all these places and enjoy.

If you want to see exactly what we did in one day and the perfect 24-hour itinerary (in my humble opinion): you can check out my post here.

Happy traveling and see you in the next destination!
